Mayor Larry Dagen and School Board Member Debby Clifton have joined forces with Shelby County, Tennessee, to engage in a seminal dialogue centered on the mental health of the area's youth and young adults. According to a recent announcement by the City of Millington, a Youth Mental Health Roundtable is slated to occur this evening from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at City Hall, located at 7930 Nelson Rd. The roundtable is an effort to begin to tear down the walls surrounding the often-stigmatized discussion of mental health among the younger demographic.
The event is not just designed for professionals and policymakers, but opens its doors widely to the public, particularly aiming to draw in young people, their families, and vested community members. This initiative appears to keenly recognize the necessity to openly discuss, to truly understand the labyrinthine nature of mental wellness. In addressing such matters, the hope is to forge a more informed and supportive community network. So often, whispers about mental health get carried on the winds of ignorance or misconception, but it's about time we openly talk about services available and listen to those who are being directly impacted.
Not only will city leaders and local experts be present, but the voices of the youth—the ones most intimately intertwined with the struggles and triumphs of their own mental well-being—will be magnified in the conversation. These interactions could very well serve as the bridge to healing and connection that are sorely needed. The roundtable, as highlighted by Mayor Dagen, aims to create a platform for "honest conversation about mental health, healing, and connection," as per the City of Millington.
