A 21-year-old man from Silver Spring has been apprehended and charged with the theft of a vehicle after a week-long investigation by Montgomery County detectives. The suspect, identified as Jason Ronil Medrano Reyes, allegedly broke into a locker at Planet Fitness located at the 2200 block of Randolph Road and stole personal belongings along with car keys belonging to an individual who was working out at the time, according to the Montgomery County Police Department's press release.
In a pursuit that ensued when officers located the stolen white 2019 Mercedes-Benz in the vicinity of 2200 block of University Boulevard, Medrano Reyes reportedly failed to stop for the police; the chase came to an end on Gwyndale Drive after a deflated driver's side tire forced the vehicle to stop, and the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was ultimately evading capture that day.
Following the incident, detectives delved into the case and were able to identify Medrano Reyes as the alleged perpetrator, leading them to secure an arrest warrant. A mere two days later, on May 6, authorities located and arrested Medrano Reyes, transporting him to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit where he now faces multiple charges including unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, theft, and related stolen vehicle charges, as described in the Montgomery County Police Department's press release. He is currently being held without bond.
The incident brings to light the perils of personal property security in public spaces and the swift response by Montgomery County police highlights their commitment to cracking down on such crimes, while the suspect has not been found guilty, the case continues as law enforcement officials piece together the circumstances that led to the theft of the luxury vehicle.
