Residents of South Kohala, Hawai'i, found their Thursday evening less calm than usual when local authorities responded to a report of an unexploded ordnance near a popular trail park. The Hawai‘i Police Department's South Kohala District officers were dispatched following a resident's discovery of what appeared to be a grenade in a riverbed, as reported by the Hawaii Police Department.
When officials arrived, they quickly blocked off the area to keep people safe. The Hawai‘i Island Bomb Squad, with help from the U.S. Army, checked the grenade and found it was not dangerous. It was safely removed from the riverbed and is no longer a risk to the public, as reported by the Hawaii Police Department.
The Hawaii Police Department reminds the public not to touch unexploded ordnance if found. Instead, leave the area and call 911 or the non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311.
