A grim scene emerged from Southeast D.C. on Sunday evening as gunfire shattered the calm on Benning Road. The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to media that officers ventured into the heart of the tumult shortly before 10 p.m. What they discovered was the aftermath of a shooting that left one man dead and another injured. The incident, which continues to draw the attention of local residents and officials, signals a grim tally for the district's battle with gun violence.
Upon their arrival at the 4600 block of Benning Road, responding officers were greeted with the sight of an unconscious adult male whose breaths had been ceased by apparent gunshot wounds. Efforts by DC Fire and EMS to resuscitate the man failed, marking yet another life claimed by gunfire in the city. As reported by the MPD, the deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Ryan Matthews of Southeast, DC. Meanwhile, a second victim, bearing injuries from the same violent incident, sought treatment at a local hospital soon after.
The Metropolitan Police Department has not yet released any information regarding suspects or motives in the death of Matthews. Rather, they've issued a call to arms of sorts—a plea for public assistance to shed light on the events. As per their statement, a substantial reward is being dangled before the eyes of potential informants. The sum, reaching up to $25,000, is on the table for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those culpable for Matthews' death.
Law enforcement urges anyone with information on this homicide to make it known. While dispelling any notion of vigilantism, they emphasize that the public should take no action other than reaching out directly to MPD by calling (202) 727-9099 or texting tips to 50411.
