The Spokane Chiefs continue their dominant streak in the WHL Western Conference Championship, triumphing over the Portland Winterhawks with a vibrant 8-5 scoreline. The Chiefs have taken a commanding 3-0 series lead, placing the Winterhawks in a precarious position. Despite the Winterhawks' valiant efforts to fight back through their surges in scoring, Spokane's offense was relentless, contributing to their Wednesday night victory and moving them a step closer to potentially securing a spot in the WHL Championship.
According to KOIN, Chase Harrington and Berkly Catton initially propelled Spokane forward with two early goals. Josh Zakreski, however, did light a spark for Portland, managing to make the net bulge, marking a 2-1 score 15:32 minutes into the game. This onset of scoring intensity did seem to forecast a high-scoring affair, one that would ultimately tilt in Spokane's favor.
In a subsequent series of volleys that saw both teams exchanging blows, Spokane ultimately emerged with the upper hand. Goals from Coco Armstrong, Mathis Preston, and Assanali Sarkenov, poured over just over four pivotal minutes, were instrumental in clinching the game for Spokane, as reported by OregonLive. Diverse contributions across Spokane's roster led to eight different players scoring, adding depth and unpredictability to their attacking play.
Glimmers of hope for Portland were spotted with Joel Plante's goal, bringing the tally to 5-4, favouring Spokane as they headed into the third period. Shortly into that final period, the Winterhawks tied the game on Josh Zakreski's second goal of the night. Mathis Preston and Will McIsaac stood out for Spokane, with each putting up a goal and three assists—a fact not lost against the backdrop of the overall offensive spectacle as KGW noted. Spokane is now poising to sweep the series in their next face-off with Portland set for tomorrow at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, with the puck dropping at 7:05 pm.
