A St. Louis County woman, Demesha Coleman, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for a fatal shooting that occurred after she took matters into her own hands to pursue her stolen vehicle. The sentencing, which took place yesterday, follows her conviction on March 14, 2024, for involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. The incident occurred at a Speedie gas station on December 21, 2022, resulting in two fatalities and one injury.
The chain of events was set off when Coleman, hoping to quickly reclaim her pilfered Hyundai SUV, tracked the vehicle via GPS after it was taken from her residence. Despite contacting St. Louis County 911 twice, Coleman decided to personally intervene, ultimately leading to a shootout at the gas station. She was not alone during this pursuit; her 19-year-old son was with her, and a third armed man became involved upon arriving at the scene.
It was reported that as Coleman and the third man advanced on the Hyundai, which had four people inside, gunfire was swiftly exchanged. Darius Jackson, a 19-year-old passenger in the stolen car, and Joseph Farrar, a 49-year-old who just happened to be in the area, were both killed as a result of the altercation. This information was gleaned from the official news release from the Circuit Attorney's office at circuitattorney.org.
In a statement reflecting on the case, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore emphasized the peril of individuals taking the law into their own hands. "This case is a tragic reminder that taking the law into your own hands can have devastating consequences. We understand the frustration victims feel when their property is stolen, but violence is never the answer," he told the Circuit Attorney's office. "Today’s sentence reflects the seriousness of Coleman’s actions and the lives lost and damaged as a result." The case was prosecuted by Assistant Circuit Attorneys Terrence O'Toole Jr., Bret Rich, and Ryan Dowd.
This incident highlights the serious consequences of taking matters into one's own hands. The loss of life and its long-term impact on the community underscore the importance of following legal processes in seeking justice.
