A St. Paul man, Eddie Lee Grasty, has been sentenced to six years in federal prison following his guilty plea on the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. The 28-year-old was also handed a subsequent three years of supervised release, as per an announcement by Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa D. Kirkpatrick, the Justice Department reported.
Grasty's conviction stems from a March 2024 incident where he was arrested for assaulting a woman. Court documents reveal he struck her in the face and head, subsequently producing a Glock handgun, which he used to boldly threaten her life. The severity of the charges was compounded by Grasty's preclusion from possessing firearms due to a record laden with previous felony convictions, including multiple violent assaults against women. "We know that defendants like Grasty—who habitually abuse and assault women—are some of the most dangerous offenders on the streets," Kirkpatrick stated.
His history of violence against women is a long and grim one, featuring incidents of stabbings and strangulations. Acting U.S. Attorney Kirkpatrick drew particular attention to this pattern of behavior during her announcement, calling Grasty's sentence "well-deserved." Grasty faced Judge Ann D. Montgomery in U.S. District Court for his sentencing.
Spurred on by the seriousness of his crimes, the case was swiftly investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with the St. Paul Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel W. Bobier represented the government in what culminated to be a successful effort to diligently ensure Grasty's confinement.
