A student was taken into custody following an incident at Westside Global Awareness Magnet School in Venice, where a gun was allegedly fired inside a classroom. The incident prompted a lockdown of the school, which caters to students from kindergarten through eighth grade, as reported by FOX 11. According to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), no injuries occurred during the event.
Details emerged that the firearm was discharged from a backpack belonging to a 7th-grade student, who then fled the campus. The incident took place around 8:30 a.m. Upon ensuring the safety of students and staff, authorities conducted a sweep of the campus, after which the lockdown was lifted, as told by a LAUSD spokesperson to KTLA.
In a statement obtained by NBC Los Angeles, parents expressed their concerns during a virtual meeting with school officials. They voiced the need for stricter security measures, such as backpack searches, to prevent similar incidents. "Even though no one got hurt, there should be more safety precautions," said Brittany Williamson, a parent.
The LAUSD informed parents of the incident with an initial message at 9:11 a.m., followed by updates throughout the day, saying, "There is no imminent threat to any student at this time." Subsequent support measures announced by the district included the provision of on-campus mental health supports, as well as extra patrols by the Los Angeles School Police Department for the week following the incident, as reported by FOX 11. In response to concerns, district statements reminded students and families of the school's policy against bringing dangerous items on campus.
Although the student responsible for carrying the gun initially evaded capture, authorities eventually located and apprehended the individual later in the day. The identity of the student was already known to school officials and law enforcement, contributing to the quick resolution of the search. Throughout the incident and the ensuing investigation, LAUSD and local law enforcement worked to communicate transparently with parents and ensure continued safety on campus.
