The Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, is gearing up for a hearing titled "Unfair Play: Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports," as the debate over the participation of transgender athletes in women's sports intensifies; at this hearing, members will investigate how these inclusion policies could be undermining federal laws supposed to ensure equal opportunities in athletics, and examine the President Trump’s Executive Order on the issue, according to an announcement made by the subcommittee, per the Committee on Oversight.
Furthermore, the committee has issued a subpoena for Damien Lehfeldt, USA Fencing Board Chair, who has previously expressed support for the inclusion of transgender individuals in women's sports but with an acknowledgment of potential physical disparities and is currently opting not to testify voluntarily at the hearing, the conflict comes after recent incidents stirred public controversy, one involving Stephanie Turner, a fencer who protested competing against a transgender opponent, and Payton McNabb, a high school volleyball player who sustained injuries playing against a biologically male player.
The hearing is now set to convene on May 7 at 2:00 PM ET in the Capitol Visitors Center, where testimonies from individuals like Turner and McNabb will be featured, with the subcommittee chairwoman Greene vowing to hold USA Fencing responsible for what she deems as "violating the law and endangering women," as she described in a statement, the details of the scheduled hearing reveal the government's increasing involvement in a sports controversy that has ignited impassioned discussions nationwide on gender identity and fairness in competition, as cite by the Committee on Oversight.
