Following an incident dating back to August last year, the Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed the arrest of a suspect connected to a 2024 homicide in Northeast Washington, D.C. In an announcement referenced from a release on the Metropolitan Police Department's official website, officers were called to the 1400 block of Downing Street early in the morning on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, where they discovered Maurice Rowe, aged 70 with no fixed address, suffering from severe injuries that would later prove fatal.
Despite initial charges against Morris Stokes, also 70, of Northeast, D.C., for Assault With A Dangerous Weapon (Pole), the case took a turn after the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner declared the death a homicide resulting from blunt force trauma; this was months after the victim had been assaulted and subsequently passed away due to his injuries on Monday, October 24, 2024, after officers had responded to the incident found the man unconscious and then transported him to a local hospital where he, later, succumbed to his injuries.
In line with these developments, Stokes faced upgraded charges from the DC Superior Court. Yesterday, he was charged with First Degree Murder While Armed, according to the Metropolitan Police Department, Stokes was apprehended by the department's Fugitive Unit at the DC Jail under a DC Superior Court Booking Order.
The victim, Rowe, described in the Metropolitan Police Department release as having "no fixed address," represents yet another narrative in the city's ongoing struggle with violence against its most vulnerable populations, while Stokes's arrest, nearly a year after the attack, marks another chapter in the city’s exhaustive pursuit of justice in homicide cases, the suspect originally apprehended on August 21, 2024, is now facing First Degree Murder charges following his recent indictment and re-arrest.
