Last night, a routine traffic stop escalated into a critical incident, prompting the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) to invoke its Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) protocol. The event began around 11 p.m. on Monday when an SLCPD officer attempted to pull over a vehicle on 600 West near South Temple. The suspect failed to comply and allegedly fled southbound, abandoning their car after crashing into several parked vehicles. According to SLCPD, a search ensued, resulting in an officer-involved shooting on the railroad tracks a short distance from the found car.
Officers, including a police K9 unit, quickly began to methodically search the area. At approximately 11:43 p.m., an encounter between an officer and the suspect resulted in the officer firing at least one shot. "The use of force in this case was a rapidly unfolding incident," SLCPD Chief Brian Redd said, as per SLCPD. He emphasized the risks and split-second decision-making inherent to police work. Following the shooting, life-saving measures were taken on-site before paramedics transported the suspect to the hospital in stable condition. The suspect's health later declined, with injuries currently described as life-threatening.
The incident has set various investigations in motion, as outlined by state law, which stipulates the implementation of the OICI protocol under such circumstances. The investigations are being led by OICI Protocol Team 4, headed by the West Jordan Police Department. The SLCPD officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard practice following OICIs. In addition, the SLCPD assured public transparency through the scheduled release of body-worn camera footage within the mandated 10-business-day window.
An update on the suspect's condition was provided earlier today: as of 3 a.m., the individual's injuries had become life-threatening. One officer reportedly suffered abrasions during the incident, but no other injuries were reported. A Public Information Officer for the SLCPD is slated to give a briefing, with a tentative schedule around 4:30 a.m. Further details are restricted pending ongoing investigations, but three photos from the initial scene have been made available for media use, with proper credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
