Yesterday at around 11 a.m., a vehicle linked to an armed robbery earlier in the month prompted a police pursuit in St. Louis. District 1 law enforcement officers had identified the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. However, the attempt was met with resistance as the vehicle led police on a chase that concluded near Natural Bridge and Clara. After abandoning the vehicle, the suspect took off on foot, eventually finding cover in dense vegetation near the railroad tracks, according to a report issued by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
The suspect, the man in his 20s, was located by authorities around 11:40 a.m. Officials from both the St. Louis Metropolitan Police and FBI Fugitive Task Force were present on the scene. Subsequent to issuing verbal warnings, shots were fired by law enforcement, and the suspect sustained injuries that later proved fatal at a hospital, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed.
The incident has its roots last Wednesday, when a BP gas station located in the area of Olive and Compton was robbed at gunpoint. A man had not only multiple items stolen but also his phone and wallet. The Real-Time Crime Center's (RTCC) technology recorded a vehicle entering and exiting the gas station parking lot at the time of the crime, which eventually led to yesterday's pursuit.
An investigation into the shooting by law enforcement is now underway, spearheaded by the SLMPD's Force Investigative Unit. Details of the procedures followed during the incident and the factors that led to the use a lethal force will be scrutinized as part of this inquiry.
