Yesterday, a suspected intruder was fatally shot during an altercation at a home on 1806 Saddle Rock Drive, as reported by the Houston Police Department; this case is now slated for review by a Harris County grand jury. The deceased suspect, a 23-year-old male whose name is still under verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds found when officers arrived in response to a shooting call.
Authorities, including HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. LaFour and Detective G. Zavala, discovered that the situation escalated when the suspect, together with another person, arrived at the residence in a silver SUV and then forced entry after causing property damage, leading to gunfire exchanged with one of the home's occupants. Not injured in the conflict, the unnamed 28-year-old resident was involved in the shooting; according to an official statement, there were no other injuries reported from inside the house.
The case took another turn when a witness indicated that the silver SUV had fled the scene after the shooting occurred, prompting a search by law enforcement, which ended with the apprehension of 19-year-old Zachary Michael Patterson after a pursuit – he managed to evade the police initially but was arrested without further incident. Charged with burglary with intent to commit assault and evading arrest in a vehicle, Patterson's involvement with the incident at the residence is yet unclear, and his booking photo was released alongside the news report.
In the meantime, it has surfaced that the shooting may have stemmed from a personal connection, as the HPD has indicated that the individual who was fatally shot had formerly been in a dating relationship with an occupant of the residence; this detail potentially provides insight into the motives behind the break-in and subsequent deadly exchange. The Harris County District Attorney's Office has instructed that the investigation should be brought before a grand jury while the HPD Homicide Division urges anyone with information to come forward and contact them at 713-308-3600.
