A fatal early morning traffic incident in Tampa has led to the arrest of 25-year-old Jefry Maldonado Hernandez, according to a report from the Tampa Government website. The TPD has charged him with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter concerning a crash that claimed the life of a man in his 60s.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Busch Blvd. and Armenia Ave., where Hernandez, driving a black Dodge Ram pickup, allegedly ran a red light and collided with a green Lexus RX300. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an innocent man this morning, and our Victims Advocate will work to aid his grieving family as they navigate this incredible loss," asserted Chief Lee Bercaw in a statement. Bercaw affirmed that the act was not accidental, but rooted in the "driver's criminal actions and reckless decision to operate a vehicle while impaired."
Details of the incident, which took place on May 24, suggest Hernandez attempted to "beat the light" as it changed to yellow, ultimately speeding through a red signal, resulting in the catastrophic crash. The driver of the Lexus sustained severe injuries and despite rapid transport to the hospital, was pronounced dead at 4:06 am.
Alongside the fatality charges, Hernandez has also been charged with driving without a valid driver's license, with death or serious bodily injury. In the aftermath of the crash, roads were closed to facilitate an investigation and necessary repairs to impacted powerlines, though they have since been reopened.
