An officer-involved shooting that led to a brief shutdown of I-75 South in Campbell County has prompted an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), per reports. The incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when an officer from the Williamsburg Police Department in Kentucky attempted to pull over a motorcyclist for speeding. The attempt resulted in a chase that continued into Tennessee, reported WVLT.
The motorcyclist refused to halt and at one point stopped abruptly near mile marker 158, subsequently backing into the officer's vehicle and then driving against traffic. "For reasons still under investigation, the Williamsburg officer fired shots," as detailed in a statement from the TBI, relayed by WATE. This event led to a BOLO (Be on the Lookout) issued for the motorcyclist across Tennessee agencies.
I-75 South was closed for several hours near mile marker 160 as the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) assisted with the situation and the subsequent investigation of the crash involving the motorcyclist, who later was involved in an accident in Anderson County, as detailed WBIR. The thoroughfare was reopened later in the evening, with one lane cleared just before 4:00 p.m., and the other by 5:50 p.m.
