An arrest has been made in connection to a series of armed carjackings that terrorized vehicle owners earlier this month. The Metropolitan Police Department apprehended a 14-year-old on charges related to two separate incidents occurring in the District's Fourth and Sixth Districts. According to Metropolitan Police Department's report, the juvenile suspect was charged with two counts of Armed Carjacking involving both a gun and a knife.
The first carjacking occurred on May 8, around 1:33 p.m., in Northwest D.C. where a victim was confronted by suspects, one of which brandished a handgun. After the victim was forced from their vehicle in the 6600 block of Georgia Avenue, the suspects made off with it, though it was later recovered. Later that day, around 6:42 p.m., another attempted carjacking took place in the 4400 block of Alabama Avenue, Southeast. The criminals were unsuccessful due to the victim's vehicle being equipped with an anti-theft device, but not before making violent threats and demanding the victim's property.
Following these threatening encounters, a booking order issued by D.C. Superior Court led to the apprehension of the teenage female on Thursday. The arrest marks a significant step in addressing the spike in carjackings across the capital, an issue that has escalated in recent times and drawn considerable concern from the public and law enforcement alike.
The MPD continues its investigation into the carjackings, urging anyone with information to come forward. The department is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any details that can lead to a conviction, emphasizing the gravity of such violent crimes in the community. Those with tips are encouraged to contact the police at (202) 727-9099 or to text the department's dedicated tip line at 50411, the announcement concluded with these details.
