Tragedy has a face, and sometimes it is a face that once fed and nurtured. According to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, Yui Inoue, born in November 1980, has been sentenced to two consecutive natural life sentences for the 2021 murder of her two children, a 7-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. She was also handed an additional 35-year term to be served consecutively for charges of child abuse and disorderly conduct.

On the day of the murders, Inoue's ex-husband called Tempe Police to a scene steeped in domestic turmoil. A dispute over finances, ahead of Inoue’s intended move back to Japan, spiraled into aggression, which culminated in her using a cleaver to wreck his computer. Though officers responded to the residence near Mill and Southern Avenues and observed the children sleeping, they would later return to a gruesome crime scene. When the officers left, Inoue delivered the fatal blows to her children using a meat cleaver, holding each child down while she did so.

Leaving behind the children, she went to a Tempe police station and informed an officer that she had been hearing voices that claimed she had killed her kids. "This woman will spend the rest of her days in prison, which is where she should be," County Attorney Rachel Mitchell firmly stated

While the immediate shock of the crime reverberated through the community, Mitchell also praised those responsible for bringing Inoue to justice. Collecting her bloody clothes in a garbage bag, partially cleaned the knife she used, took a shower, and tried to camouflage the scene with mundane debris. She packed essentials, such as her passport and cash, all details that didn’t elude the prosecutorial team's focus during the trial.

District Attorney Mitchell concluded, "I applaud those who put this defendant in prison, as well as every person at MCAO who is willing to take on this kind of ugliness to ensure justice is served."
