Chief Master Sergeant Michael M. Johnson is celebrating a new achievement as he graduates from Lipscomb University with a Master of Arts in leadership and public service, Lipscomb University reports. Johnson, a respected member of the Tennessee Air National Guard, is part of a specialized cohort that results from a partnership between Lipscomb's College of Leadership & Public Service and the Tennessee National Guard. The program aims to foster leadership abilities relevant to both military and civilian spheres.

A native of Parrottsville, Tennessee, Johnson enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1991 and has since held numerous leadership roles, his diverse experience ranging from Crew Chief to Maintenance Group Superintendent has seen him support global operations, including in Turkey, France, and Qatar. Johnson, now serves as the State Command Chief Master Sergeant for the Tennessee Air National Guard, brings his decades of experience to the academic world, simultaneously managing responsibilities and advancing his education in public service leadership.

The unique structure of Lipscomb's program, which offered classes once a week at the Tennessee National Guard base in Nashville and expanded to Knoxville, allowed Johnson to mesh his military service with higher education. "I felt like the program that Lipscomb put together would allow me to finish despite the travel schedule that I have," Johnson explained. State funding through the STRONG Act, combined with Lipscomb's tuition discount, provided an opportunity for Guardsmen to pursue their master's degree with minimal financial burden.

Johnson has been vocal about the program's impact, highlighting courses on public budgeting and policy that have deepened his understanding of the state's support for the National Guard. He credits the curriculum as instrumental in appreciating the benefits of the STRONG Act. Alongside an Associate Degree in aircraft maintenance technology and a bachelor's degree in business administration, Johnson acknowledges the significance of his journey at Lipscomb, saying, "I can't say enough about the Lipscomb staff and professors and the help they have provided during my time there", his success a testament to the commitment of both the individual and the institution catering to the unique demands of military professionals.
