The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) has announced the opening of applications for its 2025 Families First Community Grant Program, extending an opportunity for non-profits to tap into a fund earmarked to foster family resilience and self-reliance. According to a TDHS report, non-profit organizations that offer direct services to bolster family stability and encourage economic independence are invited to apply for a share of the approximately $27 million available through this initiative. Applications can be submitted on the TDHS website through July 10 at 5 PM CT.
"At TDHS, we believe that sustainable change begins at the community level," said Commissioner Clarence H. Carter. In a statement that resonates with the department's philosophy, he added, "Through the Families First Community Grant Program, we are investing in local-level partners who understand the unique challenges of our vulnerable population and their community. Our goal is to strengthen Tennessee’s safety net by empowering families with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive, not just for today, but for generations to come." This program represents an additional avenue for the investment of TANF funds aimed at aiding low-income families in overcoming systemic barriers, as per the Tennessee Department of Human Services.
The thrust of the grant is to underpin a broad spectrum of community services in critical areas such as education, health, economic stability, and nurturing family dynamics. The process for selecting grant recipients is competitive and based on each organization’s capacity to offer effective, needs-responsive services and programs. Nonprofits demonstrating a firm commitment to addressing the unique problems faced by low-income Tennessee families, while simultaneously meeting at least one of the federal TANF goals, are strongly encouraged to apply. Each successful application will reflect the department's central aim: transforming the state's support structures to promote self-sufficiency and economic prosperity.
The TDHS website provides a comprehensive overview of the agency's role in strengthening Tennesseans under the leadership of Governor-appointed Commissioner Carter. TDHS administers various services and programs, including Child Support, Child and Adult Day Services and Licensing, Families First—the state's TANF program, SNAP, Rehabilitation Services for the disabled, and Adult Protective Services.
