Bill Lee of Tennessee has officially designated this week, May 4-10, 2025, as Correctional Professionals' Week in the state, acknowledging the dedication and efforts of those employed within the correctional system. According to a recent proclamation obtained by the Tennessee Department of Correction, the week serves to honor the commitment of about 6,000 correctional professionals working in various capacities such as managing correctional facilities, supervising community offices, and overseeing day reporting centers in Tennessee.
This observed week is not just a nod to the sacrifices made by these professionals, but also a chance to show collective appreciation for their contributions. "This is a week to recognize the sacrifices correctional professionals make and the impact they have on our communities," Commissioner Frank Strada expressed, per the Tennessee Department of Correction. The department's goal is to facilitate offender rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society, while ensuring the protection of community members through effective control and supervision.
The proclamation follows a tradition established back in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, who designated the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week. Over the years, the scope has widened to celebrate all individuals involved in correctional duties. The week symbolizes the nationwide respect for those upholding justice and public safety across correctional institutions.
The Tennessee Department of Correction emphasized the variety of roles covered by correctional staff and the critical nature of their work to maintain order within the justice system.
