Texans looking to trim down their water bills and support local businesses might want to mark their calendars for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend carefully. The state is rolling out a tax break on a collection of items designed to help conserve water. As the Office of Communication reported, a diverse range of water-efficient and water-conserving products will be free from sales tax from May 24 through May 26.

The annual Texas Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday, prescribed by the state Comptroller, aims to provide financial relief for consumers and encourage the adoption of more environmentally friendly practices. There is no purchase limit, and according to the state's announcement, tax-free items, including those with a WaterSense® label or logo, are available for personal and business use and are strategically planned to coincide with the long weekend.

For more sticker-shock relief, some water-conserving residential-use products will also be exempt from sales tax during this period. As detailed by the City of Arlington's official website, eligible items are those that conserve or retain groundwater, recharge water tables, or decrease ambient air temperature to limit water evaporation. Practical picks range from drip-irrigation hoses to soil and compost and extend to mulch, rain barrels, and even plants.

Before racing to checkout, shoppers should know which items do not qualify for the tax waiver. The list includes everyday building materials, items predominantly used to create shade, and certain air conditioners and ceiling fans, albeit some do enjoy a tax break under a different initiative—the Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday. Consumers should brush up thoroughly on the guidelines to avoid unplanned expenses.
