A lockdown at Center Line High School in Macomb County led to the arrest of three students in connection with a handgun brought on campus. According to the report, the incident began unfolding Tuesday afternoon when a parent alerted the high school about a circulating image of a student in a bathroom wielding what seemed to be a loaded firearm, CBS News Detroit reported.
Swiftly acting on the tip, Center Line Public Safety Department placed the building on lockdown, a move which resulted in the identification and subsequent apprehension of the student in question; this also led to another student who was found with a handgun and, after clarity from the authorities, the lockdown was lifted at around 2:10 p.m, as declared in a letter from Center Line Superintendent Joseph L. Hayes. "All individuals involved in this incident are in police custody and will be prosecuted accordingly," Hayes noted, urging parents to impress upon their children the importance and gravity of bringing illicit items to school grounds, as per CBS News Detroit.
Residents are vocal about their concerns, reflecting a deeper sense of distress permeating the conversation around school safety. "School’s crazy nowadays. I don’t think they do enough at center line. To tell you the truth I really don’t," Ian Shorek told FOX 2 Detroit when picking up his granddaughter. Similarly, other community members are advocating for increased safety measures such as metal detectors, indicating an eroding trust in the institution's ability to safeguard its attendees.
On the legal front, the consequences facing the students started to take shape as the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged two of the students with lying to a Peace Officer, a high-court misdemeanor, and violating a weapons-free school zone, a misdemeanor, while the third student faces more severe charges including receiving and concealing a weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon, alongside the aforementioned charges, ClickOnDetroit detailed. Further, the reports indicate one student waived his preliminary hearing and now remains in the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center with a pretrial hearing set for next Wednesday, while the other two await their preliminary hearings.
