A fatal collision in Monroe County has resulted in the death of a 61-year-old woman from Toledo and serious injuries to a 19-year-old man, also from Toledo. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported that the accident occurred around 4 p.m. yesterday in Summerfield Township, along Summerfield Road, just north of Teal Road. According to authorities, the young man's vehicle struck the woman's Jeep Wrangler from behind, causing it to roll over and land in a ditch, as confirmed by FOX 2 Detroit.
The identity of the woman has not been released pending notification of her family. Driving a 2010 Mazda 6 at the time of the incident, Matthew Whitney, 19, rear-ended the Jeep, which flipped and slid to a halt on its roof, trapping the woman inside. Emergency personnel extricated her from the wreck, but she was pronounced dead at the scene as stated by 13abc.
While the investigation into the precise cause of the cataclysmic event is ongoing, early indications suggest that alcohol was not a contributing factor. Both individuals were reported to have been wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident. The extent to which speed or inattention might have played a role is still being examined. Whitney was taken to a hospital after the crash for treatment and is listed in serious condition.
