A sizable disruption unfolded on the Carrollton I-10 ramp this past Monday when a garbage truck tipped over, sparking weeks of repair work and traffic re-routing. WWLTV reported that the incident occurred just before noon, with the garbage truck hanging precariously off the Carrollton on-ramp to I-10 westbound, after it struck a support beam and caused structural damage to the Airline Drive exit ramp.
While the immediate aftermath thankfully resulted in no injuries. The crash has led to the closure of the I-10 ramp from Carrollton to westbound traffic for a projected minimum of one week and up to a month or more for the compromised Airline Drive ramp. This information comes according to statements by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) cited by both WDSU and Nola.com. DOTD is in the process of drafting a plan for the truck removal and the necessary structural repairs.
The crash, involving a Republic Services truck that was also carrying a dumpster, not only led to the prolonged closure but has significantly increased traffic congestion in the areas between Mid-City and Uptown New Orleans as reported by Scott Boyle, an engineer administrator with the DOTD, in a statement to Nola.com. In the wake of the crash, drivers have been advised to seek alternate routes to avoid the delays caused by these closures.
Law enforcement and DOTD crews were documented at the scene by WWLTV, and their continued presence will be instrumental in managing traffic, as well as coordinating the ramp repair efforts. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
