
The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) is currently conducting investigations into a fatal crash that tragically unfolded this morning in Greene County. The accident, involving an overturned vehicle, occurred on I-81 South near the Fall Branch area and was initially reported around 5:03 a.m. Traffic was affected for miles following the incident, with the southbound lanes remaining closed as of 8:50 a.m., causing significant backup and necessitating traffic to be diverted at Exit 50, as reported by WBIR.
As the response effort unfolded, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) worked swiftly to manage the congestion and provide updates. Confirmation of the overturned vehicle at mile marker 41.4 was made, signifying the severity of the incident. In an operation that is still ongoing to notify the families affected by the crash, a THP spokesperson highlighted their commitment to handling the situation with the utmost care, as per a report by WVLT.
Several local volunteer fire departments, including Fall Branch, Sulphur Springs, and Gray, alongside THP, were called to assist in the aftermath of the crash. According to a statement obtained by WATE, the Fall Branch Volunteer Fire Department was among the first responders at the scene near mile marker 41. The involvement of a tractor-trailer was noted, further underscoring the complexity and grave nature of the cleanup and investigation process.
The TDOT SmartWay map showed major delays and road closures near the crash site, with the southbound lane closed as of 8:45 a.m. The closure was implemented to protect emergency crews working to clear the scene, as per the local authorities.
