Flagstaff, Arizona, was encased in a haze of smoke following a train engine that caught fire on the west side of the city, near the Fimbrez Estates, yesterday morning. Witnesses could see the smoke unfurl across the skyline as the Flagstaff Fire Department rushed to address the incident. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the fire was a result of an overheated train engine, which led to the activation of the train's onboard fire suppression system, quelling the flames prior to the firefighters' arrival on the scene.
The Flagstaff Fire Department reported that although the fire was contained on the train, it produced a large plume of smoke that, due to an inversion layer, spread extensively over parts of Flagstaff. They issued a recommendation for locals to limit exposure to the smoke, as per a report by AZFamily. However, one detail remains ambiguous – the fire department has not confirmed if injuries were sustained during the incident, leaving residents concerned about the well-being of those aboard the train.
No wildland areas were affected by the fire, a positive outcome given the potential for such incidents to escalate into larger-scale disasters. The Fire Department made sure to stay on-site to monitor the situation following the containment of the fire.
