Three individuals implicated in the concealment of a body discovered by kayakers along Johns River near Corpening Bridge Road last August have entered guilty pleas. As reported by WBTV, Robert Ford Dale Jr., Rocky Lee Dale, and Lorie Knight Stevens admitted to their roles in the concealment of Mark Mitchell's remains yesterday. Sentences have been handed down ranging from just over three years to nearly a decade in prison.
Details emerging from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, as provided by WCNC, shed light on the fact that all three, arrested last September, originally faced felony charges for concealment of death and disturbing human remains. The body of the deceased was located on August 30, 2024, an unsettling discovery made by kayakers that initiated the investigation leading to these charges.
The trio shared the same Pax Hill Road, Morganton, address and were apprehended as a result of a search warrant executed at the residence. This is according to 860 WACB, which elaborated that Robert Dale Jr., the oldest of the accused at 59, received the longest sentence, while Stevens, the youngest, the least. Notwithstanding the silence on the cause of Mitchell's death, officials have thus far finalized the legal proceedings against those responsible for hiding his body away from the eyes of the law, and presumably, the hands of justice.
The specific terms of their sentences are 89-119 months for Robert Dale Jr., 72-99 months for Rocky Dale, and 38-58 months for Stevens, representing a closure of sorts to the grim sequence that began with the discovery near the Corpening Bridge, which was, the location where the river yielded its grim secret to passing kayakers.
