In the early hours of Tuesday morning, an AMBER Alert issued for two young children culminated in a police chase on I-90 and the swift arrest of two suspects by the Washington State Patrol (WSP). According to a press release by the WSP, a stolen blue Mazda CX-5, connected to the alert from Oregon, was spotted at a rest area near George, Washington. The sighting occurred less than half an hour after Oregon State Patrol (OSP) had informed WSP of the vehicle's location.
Once the vehicle was sighted rejoining I-90, attempts to bring the situation to a controlled end began. A traffic stop initiated by WSP evolved into a high-speed pursuit when the driver promptly opted to flee the encounter. The chase, stretching about 19 miles, concluded ultimately with a practiced Pursuit Immobilization Technique (PIT). The maneuver was deemed successful as the car slowed down to 34 MPH, enabling authorities to immobilize the vehicle and safely apprehend the occupants.
The driver, identified as 29-year-old Adan Osman Abdi, along with the female passenger, 26-year-old Trayviana Shoulders, were taken into custody without further incident. Both were charged: Abdi with Felony Eluding and Taking a Motor Vehicle without Permission 2nd degree, Shoulders for a court order violation, and with additional charges pending out of Oregon. Inside the car, the two children, aged two and three, were found unharmed and subsequently placed in protective custody.
Authorities were quick to credit the successful operation to collaboration among law enforcement parties. "WSP would like to acknowledge our allied agencies, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the Moses Lake Police Department, for their assistance in the swift and safe apprehension of these two suspects and the rescue of the two children," the press release noted. This incident underscores the impact of cross-jurisdictional cooperation in critical situations involving the welfare of young children and highlights the efficacy of AMBER Alerts in resolving potential tragedies swiftly.
