Eastpointe, a seemingly routine last Saturday afternoon, was shattered when a quarrel between two groups erupted in gunfire outside a Foot Locker store, leaving two men dead and two others wounded. The violence, which unfolded in the parking lot on 8 Mile Road around 2:45 p.m., began as an argument that quickly escalated, according to CBS News Detroit. A suspect, believed to be known by the victims, retrieved a handgun from a vehicle and fired shots before fleeing in a black sedan.
While the investigation is ongoing, and no suspect is in custody, Detective Lieutenant Alexander Holish of the Eastpointe Police Department reflected on the potential for greater tragedy, "We are lucky that no innocent bystanders got hit by a stray bullet. We are very lucky that bullets didn't enter the store," he told CBS News Detroit. In the wake of the shooting, a wave of concern has rippled through the community, with one Detroit resident, Derrick Johnson, expressing his distress, "I got two young men myself, so I'm concerned about what's going on in the community," he told CBS News Detroit.
Details about the incident from different sources reveal a chaotic scene with multiple parties involved. A woman reportedly retrieved a gun from the trunk of a car and fired shots following the initial altercation, says ClickOnDetroit. Subsequently, another individual took the gun and fled the scene. All four victims were known to each other, leading investigators to deduce that there is no current threat to the public.
The conditions of the two injured victims remain undisclosed, according to FOX 2 Detroit. The Eastpointe Police Department has not released a description of the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting. Community members who witnessed the incident are being urged to come forward and provide any information they might have by contacting the Eastpointe Police Department at 586-445-5100.
