Tragedy struck in Mifflin Township, Northeast of Columbus yesterday evening, when two police officers were shot during what began as a routine traffic stop. According to Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin, the incident took place near Mecca Road and Perdue Avenue shortly before 7 p.m., with the officers approaching a car, at which point the altercation and subsequent shooting occurred, as reported by Cleveland19.
During a press conference, Brian Steel of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9 disclosed, "That officer is, right now, in an operating room literally with his chest cracked, he is fighting for his life," speaking of one of the two officers who initially was listed in critical condition but later upgraded to stable, a stark and harrowing snapshot of the risks law enforcement faces, as cited by WLWT.
Authorities are currently on the hunt for the suspect, 21-year-old Daveonte Dixon, who was last seen wearing a gray shirt and camo pants. Following the confrontation that led to the shootings, Dixon purportedly fled the scene, sparking a manhunt; Sheriff Baldwin identified Dixon as the gunman responsible for the wounding of the two officers, according to ABC 6.
The other individual involved, the driver of the vehicle from the initial traffic stop was taken into custody but was later released after cooperation with law enforcement, indicating no involvement in the shooting, this component of the incident hints at the complexity and dynamism of such confrontations where the innocents become entwined with the accused by sheer happenstance - he was not connected to the act of violence, Sheriff Baldwin told ABC 6 in a statement. Investigations continue as law enforcement appeals to the public for assistance in locating Dixon and bringing a resolution to this unfortunate episode.
