In a strategic move that's set to reshape the streets of Arlington, Texas, Uber has announced a partnership with May Mobility, a frontrunner in the autonomous vehicle space. In a straightforward gamble on a hands-free future, the ride-hail giant plans to introduce thousands of AVs on its platform in the coming years, kicking off in Arlington by late 2025. City of Arlington detailed the collaboration, projecting the venture will tap into the nation's estimated $1 trillion AV market.
Uber, ever the behemoth in its market, joins forces with May to introduce and confidently scale AV transportation offerings. Initially, these rides will include a safety operator on board, but the plan is to shift to completely driverless trips soon. This careful transition acknowledges the public's mixed feelings towards a driverless horizon, while firmly nudging them towards acceptance. According to Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, in a statement detailed by the city's news release, "We are thrilled to be partnering with May Mobility to continue to scale the availability of autonomous vehicles across the United States."
At the core of this technological leapfrog is May Mobility's patented MPDM technology, which applies AI to decision-making with an astute, human-like touch. This is not your grandfather’s cruise control; this system is designed to quickly navigate complex traffic scenarios without being tripped up by exceptions. Per their collaboration announcement, MPDM thrives on adaptability, a trait already demonstrated across other U.S. cities and in Japan.
The aim is to open up the world of autonomous travel to the masses by bringing homegrown, hybrid-electric Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS vehicles to the Uber platform. "Launching on the Uber platform is a big signal to the market that May Mobility is ready to quickly expand to major markets as the pre-eminent autonomy-as-a-service provider," said Edwin Olson, CEO and co-founder of May Mobility, in a statement acquired by the City of Arlington. The service extension will progress following the Arlington debut, with eyes set on other U.S. markets in 2026.
