Utah State University is beefing up its commitment to student-athlete well-being with the recent hiring of Trevor Short as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Health, Wellness & Performance, a move aimed at integrating physical and mental health with peak performance on the playing field. As reported by USU Today, Short is tasked with overseeing nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, mental wellness, and sports performance divisions within the university's athletic program.

Before joining the USU staff, Short brings a background in performance and sports science from his two-season tenure at the University of Hawai'i, Manoa and his time as an adjunct professor and Hawai'i State board director of the National Strength and Conditioning Association since June 2023 Short's work here involved the implementation of holistic sports science initiatives designed to enhance athlete readiness and general team function, with a focus on data and technology to support decision making. "I'm incredibly grateful to Utah State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau, USU Deputy Athletic Director of External Engagement Bobby Nash and the hiring committee for entrusting me with this opportunity," Short said, as per USU Today.

In his statement about the new role, Short conveyed his ambition to raise Utah State Athletics to a national leader in high performance, emphasizing an integrated approach inclusive of sports medicine, mental health, nutrition, and performance science. "My vision is to elevate Utah State Athletics by fostering an integrated high-performance model," he said, as obtained by USU Today. These areas are often siloed in traditional athletic programs, but Short's integrated strategy aims at ensuring maximum roster availability while optimizing athletic performance.
