Surprise, Arizona, is all set to welcome a familiar face as the new head of its police department, as City Manager Bob Wingenroth announced the selection of Lieutenant Evan Becher for the role of Police Chief. Becher, who has clocked in nearly two decades with the Surprise Police Department, will step into his new position on June 9, succeeding the interim Police Chief Charles Morin, according to city news released on Wednesday.
Becher's career in Surprise began as a patrol officer back in 2007 and has since traversed the path through various divisions, including Patrol, Investigations, Training Unit, and Tactical Support. Notably, he has spearheaded the development of the city's first full-time SWAT team and has been instrumental during critical incidents such as a hostage situation involving an infant last year, says Wingenroth. Despite receiving a healthy influx of 44 applications for the position, it was Becher's deep-rooted connection with the city and track record of fostering community ties that clinched the deal.
To no one's surprise, Becher's qualifications are comprehensive. Alongside an impressive resume that boasts an MBA from Ottawa University and a BA in Psychology from Arizona State University, Becher is also recognized for his role as a certified instructor. Whether gracing the stage at the Maricopa County Law Enforcement Training Academy or contributing his expertise to statewide tactical training, Becher has established himself as a knowledgeable figure, equally dedicated to molding others in the practice of law enforcement.
Morin, who stepped in as interim chief following the departure of former Police Chief Benny Piña, will continue to offer his wealth of experience to the department. Morin's resume, punctuated by more than 35 years of service in the field, speaks of extensive operational leadership, according to the city's announcement.
The City of Surprise has a clear message for residents and followers: mark your calendars for June 9th when Becher officially takes the mantle.
