A surge of violence surged Minneapolis over the weekend, with a toll of five homicides occurring within a 24-hour period. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the city is investigating a series of shootings, which brought a violent day to a grim close.
The first of these incidents occurred just before the stroke of midnight on Tuesday, on East 25th Street, where police encountered a crime scene that claimed the lives of three individuals — two men and one woman — and left two more with severe injuries, according to the City of Minneapolis. Having been alerted by 911 calls and a ShotSpotter activation, the officers' discovery of the victims marked the start of a bloody interval in the city's recent history. Subsequently, in the early afternoon of April 30, a man in his 30s was found fatally shot on Cedar Avenue South, with errant bullets also threatening harm to two small children in an unrelated vehicle.
By evening, at around 7:45 p.m. the same day, further gunshots prompted police response in the 3000 block of 15th Avenue South. They found a man in his 50s critically wounded, having succumbed to his injuries later at Hennepin Healthcare. With no arrests made till now, investigators are digging for connections between the incidents but initial insights propose the shootings were not randomly perpetrated. "The level of violence this city has experienced in less than 24 hours is infuriating," O’Hara said, the City of Minneapolis stated.
