The Metropolitan Police Department is urgently seeking information related to the unresolved homicide of 3-year-old Ty'ah Settles. On the one-year anniversary of her death, authorities remain determined to find justice for the young girl who was tragically killed in a shooting in the 2300 block of Hartford Street, Southeast.
According to a statement obtained by the Metropolitan Police Department, the child was found with a gunshot wound at a nearby fire station after officers arrived at the scene on May 3, 2024, responding to the sounds of gunfire. Despite the emergency services' efforts, including those of MPD officers and DC Fire and EMS, and an airlift by United States Park Police, Ty'ah succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.
"This case weighs heavily on all of us at the Metropolitan Police Department and we continue to grieve with Ty’ah’s family," said Police Chief Pamela A. Smith. Large is the reward, which stands at $50,000 for anyone providing information leading to an arrest and conviction, comprising contributions from the Metropolitan Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
The investigation, spearheaded by the MPD's major case squad, has yet to yield a suspect or suspects in the year that has passed since Ty'ah was found critically injured. Gathered outside the fire station where the girl was first aided, community members feel a weighty mix of sadness and determination—a year has passed, but the call to action for information remains urgent. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the police at (202) 727-9099 or to send a tip via the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
