Mayor Muriel Bowser raised the LGBTQIA+ flag at the John A. Wilson building yesterday to mark the kickoff of Pride celebrations in Washington, DC. The event, now in its third year, coincides with the capital hosting WorldPride 2025, the second time the event is held in a US city. The flag raising symbolizes the start of numerous events running through June 8, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pride in the city.
According to a release by the Mayor's Office, the ceremony featured not only Mayor Bowser but also community members, representatives from Capital Pride, and DC Council members. The LGBTQIA+ community and WorldPride participants are welcome to attend the festivities, which spotlight the diverse experiences within the LGBTQIA+ community. Notable upcoming events include the WorldPride Parade and a concert headlined by Shakira.
Downtown DC will host a WorldPride Welcome Center, while other activities like the 17th Street Block Party will take place in the historic Dupont Circle neighborhood. "The Diversity of Pride" series aims to highlight various perspectives within the LGBTQIA+ community. With over 85 events already under its belt, the celebration promises to keep attendees engaged with a myriad of cultural and social festivities arranged for the coming days.
WorldPride 2025 has slated an extensive program with something for everyone in the community. Doechii and Cynthia Erivo are set to perform at the WorldPride Festival, adding to the event's already star-studded lineup. The full schedule of events, including details on times, locations, and accessibility, is available at the official WorldPride website, where attendees can plan their participation in the historical celebration.
