Phoenix drivers, prepare for some disruptions this weekend as ADOT rolls out lane restrictions and road closures for freeway improvements from May 30 to June 2. ADOT's announcement detailed the major closures, which include the westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) being shut down between Gilbert and Cooper roads from the early hours of Saturday till the evening for a widening project.
The ramifications are citywide, with westbound Loop 202 on-ramps from Santan Village Parkway to Lindsay Road also getting the red light alongside the corresponding frontage road; drivers should consider detouring via westbound Pecos or Germann roads, or switch to the US 60 (Superstition Freeway) as an alternative route. The Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) will follow suit with right lane closures near 51st Avenue spanning from Friday night to Monday dawn, and during the same window, 51st Avenue itself will see barricades in both directions at its Loop 101 intersection—travelers might want to keep 35th or 59th avenues in their back pockets for crossing.
Sunday night also packs a punch with the northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) ramp to the westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) closing shop for pavement maintenance, causing drivers to reroute; ADOT suggests hopping onto the eastbound Loop 202, exiting at Dobson Road, then doubling back to the westbound Loop 202.
This suite of upgrades is a piece of the larger transportation puzzle being assembled in the Phoenix area, a project backed by funds from Proposition 400 and the recently passed Proposition 479, which keeps the half-cent tax active for future transportation projects in the region. Despite wet weather or other unforeseen events potentially tweaking the schedule, real-time updates will be up for grabs on the Arizona Traveler Information site at AZ511.gov, through the AZ511 app, or via a simple 511 call.
