Hundreds of Worcester residents united for a peaceful Mother's Day protest on the green expanse of Worcester Common, decrying an incident that has since stoked the embers of a local and national debate over immigration enforcement tactics. According to Boston 25 News, the mobilization came in response to a cell phone video capturing ICE agents detaining a Brazilian mother in front of her family, sparking outrage and bringing neighbors and community leaders to the scene.
The video, which rapidly went viral, showed the ensuing chaos as individuals attempted to physically block ICE vehicles to prevent the separation. In the fracas, Worcester police arrested a school committee candidate and another person on the grounds of having allegedly pushed officers. "Regardless of somebody’s status as a documented person or not, there’s a due process, and there’s a way to treat people with human rights," Laura, a protest attendee who opted to withhold her last name, told Boston 25 News.
In the same vein, Worcester residents gathered not only to express their discontent but also to directly challenge lawmakers to safeguard those who call this city home. "The Safe Communities Act provides due process for these immigrants, so they're not taken up illegally," protester Kate Merritt-O'Toole voiced during the rally, as quoted by CBS News Boston. In training their ire at ICE's approach, demonstrators emphasized a perceived intimidation strategy—"They are trying to instill fear in people right now and that is absolutely unnecessary," another rally-goer stated.
Despite heightened emotions, police confirmed that yesterday's demonstration remained peaceful. The Worcester police are continuing their review of last Thursday’s confrontation and have indicated that additional charges may be filed.
