A standoff that extended for over nine hours between Worcester Police officers and a local resident ended with the man in custody on Monday afternoon. The Worcester Police Department disclosed on their official social media platforms that the incident began yesterday, shortly after noon when officers were called to a Forestdale Rd address to check on the welfare of a resident making threats.
The arrival of the authorities led to the discovery that the individual had barred himself inside his apartment. There were concerns that the threats could involve explosives, a situation that escalated when the resident, identified as 53-year-old Raymond Nydam, brandished what looked like a rifle at an officer, shouting threats. Officers, including Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) members and a clinician, moved to a safer location, initiating a standoff, according to a post by the Worcester Police Department.
The situation grew tenser as Nydam became more agitated, throwing items from his residence and at one point wielding what appeared to be a samurai sword. Hours of operationally sensitive negotiations ensued, with the Crisis Negotiation Team attempting to resolve the standoff peacefully. These details surfaced from the statement provided by the Worcester Police Department.
The standoff, which had drawn an array of law enforcement agencies, including the SWAT team, came to a conclusion when Mr. Nydam finally exited his apartment after approximately nine and a half hours. Following his exit, he was placed under arrest, charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. The incident, which no doubt brought considerable tension to the Forestdale community, ended without reports of injuries to officers or the individual in question, the Police Department further informed.
