Seventeen individuals were detained by the Denver Police during protests on Tuesday. As reported by 9News, the demonstration, which saw a significant turnout in downtown Denver, was held to voice opposition to President Donald Trump's immigration policies and to express unity with similar protests in Los Angeles.
Demonstrators faced a robust law enforcement response, with police deploying smoke and firing pepper balls to disperse the crowds and prevent them from blocking roadways or accessing certain areas. According to The Denver Post, these measures were taken to ensure the flow of traffic and public safety.
The charges resulting from the arrests included obstruction of streets, disobedience of lawful orders, graffiti, interference with police authority, and second-degree assault, both to a peace officer and in another instance. At least one individual was suspected of throwing projectiles unlawfully, as detailed by the Denver Post's coverage of the event.
The Denver Police, as obtained by KDVR, assured the public of their commitment to the safety of all individuals and clarified their stance on immigration enforcement. "The Denver Police Department does not assist with the enforcement of civil federal immigration laws," the department said.
