
Memphis was shaken by an act of violence at a popular food spot this past Thursday. A shooting at American Deli on 3741 Lamar Avenue left one man critically injured and led to the swift arrest of an 18-year-old suspect.
According to a social media post from the Memphis Police Department, officers responded to the emergency at approximately 12:20 p.m. on June 19. They found the male victim, who had been working as a DoorDash delivery person, struck by gunfire. The individual was quickly transported to Regional One in critical condition, as the suspect made his escape eastbound from Lamar and Democrat. Witnesses described the suspect as a male wearing a white t-shirt, gray jeans, and dark shoes, last seen carrying a semi-automatic pistol.
Luckily, the authorities were able to not only locate but also put into custody the alleged perpetrator later that day. Malik Willis was arrested at 2602 Mount Moriah Road and has since been charged with attempted second-degree murder and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
The police investigation brought to light crucial details about the sequence of events and the accused. By 6:04 p.m., mere hours after the incident, Willis was apprehended, and his connection to the crime started to fully unfold. The charges against Willis, noted for their seriousness, highlight the gravity of the situation and the potential consequences that await him. The Memphis community now looks to the judicial system to bring justice to the victim and restore a sense of safety to patrons of the American Deli and others who frequent the Lamar Avenue area.
