The Director of the Department of Development, Lydia Mihalik, clearly understands the foundational nature of solid internet structures. By alleviating the financial burdens that often hinder such necessary upgrades, Ohio's goal is to ensure that all its communities can confidently move forward into the digital future. According to the statistics provided by the governor's office, an impressive $23,698,526 has already been requested through the program's third round of funding, which addresses the needs for 1,333 pole replacements and 3,622 underground installations.
Established under House Bill 33 of the 135th General Assembly, the Broadband Pole Replacement and Undergrounding Program offers a substantial reimbursement—up to 75 percent of eligible costs—to ISPs for pole replacements and undergrounding projects in unserved areas, intending to eliminate cost barriers holding back progress. The press release from the governor’s office further explains that ISPs can receive up to $7,500 per pole, and it elaborates on the wide-ranging costs covered, from trench digging to disposing of old utility poles. The non-competitive, first-come, first-served program has set aside an impressive $50 million and will continue the reimbursements until either the funds are depleted or June 1, 2029, arrives.
