A yacht named "Timeless" was involved in an accident after it struck a dock on the Hudson River near the Henry Hudson Parkway and West 125th Street in Harlem yesterday afternoon, according to authorities. The New York City Fire Department reported to CBS News that the crash occurred around 4:15 p.m, resulting in numerous injuries.
Despite no life-threatening injuries, the FDNY has confirmed that 35 individuals were hurt in the incident, with 22 needing to quickly be taken to local hospitals for treatment. First responders, alongside Marine units, helped to securely escort the yacht to a dock at West 125th Street, where the hundreds of passengers were unloaded. The NYPD is actively investigating to try and determine the cause of the accident.
Guest Monica Hale recounted her experience saying, "We were told to go back inside, but of course, we don't listen, and when the boat jerked, somebody said, 'Brace yourself.' Everybody went flying down or flying back," she told CBS News.
Zytiin King, who was celebrating her 69th birthday with nearly 400 guests on the vessel, expressed her shock at the event. "Twenty-five years, I've been doing a boat ride. Never had this happen," King shared with CBS News. The Coast Guard has reported that the yacht sustained some damage, although specific details on the extent are yet to be released as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, a woman named Leiya reported that her mother was one of those injured, saying "She's in pain" after the impact caused her mother to fall.
This recent incident occurs just one month after another maritime accident, where a Mexican navy training ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in two fatalities and 19 injuries. That prior occurrence remains under official inquiry as authorities work to prevent similar happenstances on New York's busy waterways.
Gothamist reported that the party boat was carrying several hundred people at the time of the collision. Police stated that an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the incident. Authorities have not yet released additional details, and the inquiry remains active as officials continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the event.
