An MTA bus driver in Brooklyn allegedly struck an 87-year-old man, leaving him critically injured last night, as reported by the NYPD. The incident, which took place at the intersection of East 12th Street and Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay around 6:40 p.m., involved the pedestrian being pinned under the bus after the driver who was making a left turn hit him, as per Gothamist.
According to officials, the elderly man was within a crosswalk when the collision occurred, and was discovered by responding officers in grave condition under the city bus, surveillance footage released shows the man approaching the middle of the crosswalk before getting struck and a discarded sneaker marks the scene of the accident, a witness described the event to The Post as "pretty horrific" and added the bus driver "definitely wasn't looking" at the time of the incident.
The man was swiftly transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn with significant injuries, where he remains in critical condition. The MTA driver involved in the accident was treated at Coney Island Medical Center for emotional trauma resulting from the incident and is reported to be in stable condition, sources informed News 12. The MTA spokesperson deferred comments to the NYPD, as the bus was reportedly not carrying passengers since it was not in service at this juncture, and the MTA is purportedly unclear on how long the driver has been with the agency, also the driver underwent drug and alcohol testing in accordance with MTA policy.
No arrests have yet been made as the investigation led by the Highway Collision Investigation Squad continues with the driver having remained at the scene and awaited to engage with the investigators.
