In a noteworthy display of diligence and care from the County of San Diego Animal Services, a Belgian Malinois named Eagle has found relief from neglect and abuse thanks to the concerted efforts of local authorities and a dedicated veterinary team. The County of San Diego reports that the dog, discovered by Lt. Natalie Harrington in Campo while she attended to a separate call, was suffering from a severely injured leg.
Swift action followed as Lt. Harrington secured a warrant to impound Eagle and facilitate her urgent medical needs; post haste, the canine was entrusted to Animal Services where a specialist veterinarian employing advanced tools, among them laser technology, took charge of the surgery - this involved the amputation of Eagle's leg to protect her overall wellbeing, a procedure swiftly leading to her recovery on just her three days on her three remaining legs. Animal Services Director Vaughn Maurice expressed, per the County of San Diego, “County Animal Services protects the health, safety and welfare of people and animals in unincorporated San Diego County,” going on to acknowledge the community and staff's key role in offering animals like Eagle a second chance.
The cost of Eagle's $2,900 treatment did not go unaddressed; it was covered by the Spirit Fund, a Veterinary Medical fund designed to assist animals requiring extensive medical care.
