Travelers and residents around the Anthem area should brace for construction as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) gears up to begin a significant paving project on Interstate 17 starting the evening of June 22. In a report by ADOT, the $15.1 million endeavor aims to enhance the driving experience from State Route 74 (Carefree Highway) up to Anthem Way.
Fortunately for daytime commuters, lane restrictions along the busy I-17 aren't expected in the immediate future. Initial efforts will focus on improving cross street sidewalks and updating the guardrail near the Anthem Way interchange, maintaining the flow of through traffic. However, some on- and off-ramp closures may occur, potentially impacting drivers' usual routes.
As the summer months progress, ADOT will commence nighttime resurfacing in August, stripping away the worn top layer of pavement and laying down fresh asphalt, a process designed to minimize disturbance to the public. The scope of the project is comprehensive, encompassing not just the freeway's surface but also ramps and bridges, ensuring a thorough upgrade to the interstate's infrastructure.
Amongst the slated improvements are the sealing of bridge decks, sign replacements, and the fortification of highway shoulders. New drainage pipes will also be put in place, along with crisp pavement markings, details outlined in the ADOT announcement. These enhancements are not merely cosmetic; they represent a response to the wear of time and the elements, an investment in the sustained livelihood of Arizona's roadways.
The project, anticipated to be complete by spring 2026, is funded through the federal National Highway Performance Program. ADOT's commitment to the task at hand promises a smoother, safer journey for all who traverse this stretch of I-17, be they local families or interstate travelers. More information on the project's timeline and impact on travel can be found by visiting ADOT's website.
