As the July Fourth weekend approaches, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) urges travelers to make safety their top priority during their holiday road trips. State highways will remain open as the Arizona Department of Transportation won't schedule any closures from Thursday afternoon to Sunday night, according to an announcement made by the agency. Despite this pause in roadwork, Arizona Department of Transportation cautions drivers to anticipate the unexpected, including potential unscheduled highway closures due to various unforeseen incidents such as crashes or wildfires.
Travelers are advised to allow extra time during peak periods, which are expected to be Thursday afternoon, July 3, and the late afternoon to evening of Sunday, July 6. In a statement obtained by the Arizona Department of Transportation, the department anticipates heavy traffic with possible delays especially around the Phoenix and Tucson areas. Even though there won't be planned highway closures, drivers should still prepare to potentially adjust their routes and schedules.
Hotspots for high traffic during the weekend include the Interstate 17 Improvement Project work zone and key highways such as State Route 87 and US 93. Arizona Department of Transportation recommends travelers to pack an emergency kit for their summer travel, which should include essentials like extra drinking water, a first-aid kit, charged cellphones, and snacks. They further stress the importance of carrying prescription medications and protective items such as a hat and sunglasses for changing weather conditions.
To stay safe on the roads, the Arizona Department of Transportation reminds drivers to avoid distractions, check their vehicles, and get enough rest before traveling. “Eyes up, phones down. Don’t text while driving,” Arizona Department of Transportation advises. If you're towing a trailer, make sure chains are secure to avoid sparks that could cause fires, and don’t park on grass—hot car parts can start fires. Arizona Department of Transportation will have crews and the Incident Response Unit ready to help travelers and respond to emergencies during the holiday.
