Akron's Patterson Park neighborhood is on the brink of change as the City prepares to unveil the completed renovations of its community center. According to a recent press release from the City of Akron, the rejuvenation project, which cost $7.8 million, was funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. The grand unveiling is set for June 10th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
"This beautiful facility is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and will be a cherished community asset for many years to come," said Mayor Malik, per the city's press release, about the Patterson Park Community Center's new look, which now accommodates a suite of community-driven facilities. The expansion, which increases the square footage from 8,300 to 12,400, enables a range of indoor sports, including volleyball, pickleball, and basketball, to be played within its walls.
The Patterson Park Community Center revamp is more than just a structural makeover; it is a direct response to community pleas for more recreational and communal spaces. In a strategic plan developed from a 2019 community needs survey with over 1,500 responses, presented by the City of Akron Recreation and Parks Bureau, the upgrade of community centers and other facilities was highlighted. A follow-up survey conducted in 2020 with over 500 respondents echoed the demand, pinpointing Patterson Park as a key site for improvement.
