Akron police have released bodycam footage from an incident on May 25, where officers and a suspect exchanged gunfire. The release includes an edited 5 1/2-minute segment of the confrontation, initiated after police were responding to a separate event and heard nearby gunshots. In a statement detailed by WKYC, it is revealed that the audio begins with a 911 call from a woman who had been shot in the leg, identifying the suspect and indicating his last known direction.
Further in the footage, officers are seen responding to the chaotic scene where shouts from the parking lot alerted them, "He's right there." The video, shared by Cleveland19, proceeds to rapidly unfold as more than a dozen gunshots are heard and the officers work to chase down the assailant quickly. During this exchange, the suspect identified as Calvin Hunt managed to elude arrest despite the heavy police presence and gunfire briefly.
In the aftermath of the incident, Lt. Michael Murphy recounted to Cleveland19, "The suspect was able to escape and ran away from the scene. Our officers then started running. Responding officers came to the area to try to catch the suspect." Despite Hunt's initial flight, Akron police, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal's Office and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, were able to apprehend him later that day.
