As temperatures rise and mid-June approaches, Apache Junction residents are preparing for monsoon season—a yearly weather event that can bring torrential rains, flash flooding, and other severe hazards. With the official start set for June 15, there’s no time to waste in getting ready, as reported by the City of Apache Junction.
Ensuring the safety of both property and community is a balancing act that requires preparation and foresight, which is why clearing debris from around your home to prevent drainage clogs and securing objects that high winds could turn into projectiles are essential steps recommended by city officials, along with trimming trees and maintaining washes to control stormwater runoff, the city detailed in an alert on its website.
Residents living in flood-prone zones are urged to build an emergency kit that should last 72 hours, ideally stocked with water, food that won't spoil, flashlights, medication, and additional vital supplies for the typically unpredictable and powerful monsoon storms.
To support these preparations, the Superstition Fire & Medical District is stepping up by providing free sandbags at key locations around Apache Junction: Fire Station 261 at 1135 W. Superstition Blvd., Fire Station 262 located at 3995 E. Superstition Blvd., and Fire Station 264 at 7557 E. U.S. Highway 60 in Gold Canyon is all participating, as is Pinal County with sand and bags available at 305 E. Superstition Blvd., though residents should note limited hours and the need to bring their shovel in order to fill bags; such details appeared on the city's alert page.
